Long Lost Cards from Dusitn Hoffman

I uncovered this long forgotten partial post.  It seems I scanned the cards, labeled it as from Dustin but never wrote anything or published.  I did this all the way back on Oct 4.  Sadly it was so long ago I don't remember anything about the transaction.  I'm not even sure what blog Dustin runs, if he runs one, or what I sent him.  Hopefully I sent him something and it isn't something that fell through the cracks like this post did.

I have uncovered about 4 piles of cards that I have packaged in envelopes with no name on them so I'm not sure who I was supposed to send them to.  Two are stacks of random stuff like I pulled it for a want list.  One is a stack of Braves and one is a stack of Saints cards from the 80-90s.  If anyone reads this and thinks that one of those stacks may be yours please let me know.

Anyway on to the cards I received for undisclosed other cards that I may or may not have sent to Dustin Hoffman.  Who I remember when e-mailing back and forth asking there be no Rainman or Tootsie comments.

I whole bunch of 1986 TCMA cards.  I remember scanning these with one backwards so that everyone could see the design on the back.  I probably had some kind of smart alec remark when I did this months ago but it has since lost me.  Some great HOF Red Sox in this stack.  The Yaz is my favorite because he is the only one I ever saw play.

Some Fleer Stickers.  Since this package I have finished the 87 Fleer team set but Dustin did most of the work.

Some more TCMA cards.  This time they are of the 1987 variety.  Gotta love the back of these.  Baseball's Greatest Team.  I need not say anymore.

A whole slew of Topps Total.  After I received this package I had enough cards from the team set to put them in pages.  I dont' think I have added any more since and it remains the only year Topps Total that I am remotely close to finishing.

In all a bunch of great cards here.  I'm really sorry this post got lost for so long.  Hopefully Dustin received his cards from me and he liked what I sent.

My Very First Original 1887 A&G Card

The Collective Troll had sent me an e-mail warning me that he had sent me a package with a surprise in it.  Oh what a surprise it was.

What a beautiful card and the perfect card to post for Boxing Day.

Thanks Mark!!  I hope you have a wonderful trip to meet your new grandson!!

This year's first Card Related Christmas Card

I received a Christmas card from Emerald City Diamond Gems.  Since you have probably seen a few others posting these you know they contain the best Christmas presents possible. Baseball Cards!!

Here is some of the good stuff my card contained.

That is two 59 Topps Rookie Star Red Sox and  two 61 Topps Red Sox.

The cool thing about one of the 61s is it has the ruminants of a sticker on the back.  I wonder what it was.  More than likely it is from a Topps sticker, I wonder which one it was...

Thanks for the great surprise and...

Merry Christmas To All!!!!!!

My First Gonzalez Card in a Red Sox Uniform!!

I got a package from Dayf.  It contained my first Edgar Gonzalez Red Sox card.

As you can see it is a 1/1 Dayf creation.

He also knew I had some stuff going on and wanted to cheer me up with some stuff from the vintage card show he went to not long ago.

Nothing like old Bowman to get one in a good mood.

 Except for maybe old Topps.
Well, then again stickers are always great fun too.

Thanks, Dayf for the Pick Me Up Package.

Did You Know Baseball cards Rule

I recently made a trade with Ben.  He runs a blog with a great title.  Click on the picture to check out his blog.

Ben has a Clemens collection and evidently hd has some doubles.  This is one of the many he sent me.  It is a cool card from a set I have never seen before, 1994 Oscar Myer Disks.  It has a little tab on the top that says pull here.  I'm guessing that if you cut the perforations and pull the tab it stands up like one of the pop up book you read as a kid.  Cool concept but mine is staying uncut.

This is the last 1986 Fleer Sticker I needed for the team set.  I'm not sure exactly where Jim is leaning that bat but it looks painful.

Thanks for the cards Ben.  I hope you like the return package when it gets to your door.

*I was lucky as all heck last year.  I don't even watch college football and still won.

More Cards from Gordon

There are lots of people that I have traded cards with numerous times.  One trader though stands alone as far as how many times we have traded.  I'm not even sure trading is the correct term.  Every time I get something he needs I send it to him, no warning, no questions asked, and he does the same for me.  It happens quite frequently too because we collect the same thing.  I have actually sent Gordon so many packages I have memorized his address right down to the zip code.

I hardly have any early Heritage in either the Topps or Bowman variety so I love getting them in the mail.  The fact that it is Pedro makes it that much better.

This is a horrible scan because this is one shiny card of the Captain.  One more year of Jason being on the team makes me happy, even if he is just the backup.  I have to wonder how many years he has left though because every time I see him in person he looks like he has a hard time walking.

Another crazy shiny 90 Insert that my scanner doesn't show well. I got a bunch mo Mos the other day from someone but that is for a different post.

I don't know why but I like parallel cards.  Even ones that just have a little bit of a difference like these Electric Diamond cards.

I wish companies would put out more sets like this.  Sets filled with only retired players.  People always liked sets like All Time Fan Favorites and Archives why not issue sets like that rather than retro sets with new players on an old card.

Thanks Gordon

New Oddball PC Pickups

Along with the Venezuelan Virdons I posted already I have acquired a few other oddball Virdon cards in the last couple months.  I figured I would stick them all in one post.

First up is a 1963 Pirates IDL #26 Bill Virdon.  From what I can gather it was a regional set.  I have seen these go in the $20 range and I have seen them go in the $5 range.  This one was of the $5 variety.

Next is an autographed postcard.  It was listed as a 61 but there is no markings whatsoever that say what the year may be.  Does anyone know if the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards have old baseball postcards in it?

Another oddball.  I'm guessing it is a 55-54 Cardinals postcard because I can't find a reference for anything else that has him in a Cardinals uniform.

This is the Canadian version of 62 Post.  Now I just need to pick up the Jello version.  That is if I can ever figure out how to tell the difference between Post and Jello.  I read that is has to do with a red line.  But any that I have ever seen listed on ebay as Jello had no red lines.

This is the oddest of all the Virdons I picked up.  Heck it may be my oddest pickup of all.  It is a 1972-83 Dimanche/Derniere Heure #111 Bill Virdon MG.  It is extremely over sized, larger even than 8x10, and has holes in it so that it can be placed in a 3 ring binder.  It was listed with a 20 BIN or Best Offer by the same guy that had the Post Canadian.  I got them both together shipped for less than that.

As always I'll trade or buy your Virdon cards.  I have a Bill Virdon Wantlist here.

Help, I need some advice!!

I picked up some Virdon cards off of ebay.  I have never seen a Venezuelan card in person.  So when I saw some pop up I had to have them.  I'm not at all sure about them though.  This first one was advertised as a 72 Venezuelan Sticker card.  It however doesn't look much like the one that got picked up at the national by the #5 Type Collection.  So does anyone know if this is a legit card.  It actually shipped from Venezuela so it could be.

I scanned it alongside this 64 that I picked up from the same guy so everyone could see the small oddball size.  The 64 was also advertised as a Venezuelan.

I was expecting a different language on the back but I'm pretty sure it is legit, cause the back is a different color.

If anyone has any information on the sticker card I would really appreciate it.

If you were expecting a package from me and didn't get it...

Well first my computer crapped out then I had it back for a day and my air card quit.  So if I haven't been able to get any e-mails someone is sending cause I can't access my email right now.  (work blocks me from email but not blogging, go figure)  It is also the reason I havn't shipped some packages I promised.  I keep all my addresses in my e-mail.   Hopefully I get my new air card in the mail (better be by Monday) and I can respond to people and get packages out.  If you are one that is expecting something and I haven't sent it please send me a message cause it has been almost two weeks since I read an e-mail and I could have possible forgot something.  I know I owe Peterson, Wicked, Justin and Spankee but there could easily be more.

Sorry!!

Funniest Baseball Related Quote I've heard in a While

After the Nationals gave Werth his HUGE (7 years 126 Million) payday GMs started talking.  Here is what new Mets GM Sandy Alderson had to say:

"Makes some of our contracts look pretty good.  That’s a long time, and a lot of money. I thought they were trying to reduce the deficit in Washington."

A New Card Blog Go See!!!!

Earlier in the year The Real DGF announced he bought a collection consisting over a million cards.  He has started a new blog The Real DFG's Card Garage.  He is going to document some of the interesting stuff he finds as he attempts to go through the collection.  His first find is a cool old tobacco card.  Stop by his garage and check it out.

Cards From Cardsplitter

When I moved to Missouri as a kid the first kid I met my age was named TJ.  He was one of my very best friends up until his dad got a job at the college in Zanesville OH right after we graduated.  Every time I see a post or a Group Break that Chris or (Cardsplitter as he is better known) it reminds me of my friend.  Here are some cards from Zanesville.

1982 Donruss Dwight Evans - This card finished off my 82 Donruss team set.  It was also a card on my top ten list.  (Actually it still is but only because I now have to download a new picture editor after my computer crashed)

2009 Finest Kevin Youkilis - Notice how he doesn't have his hands held apart?  Topps used an old picture for this card because he changed his batting stance prior to the 09 season.

1995 Topps Embossed - It took me awhile to figure out what this card was.  It doesn't say Embossed on it anywhere.  I couldn't even tell it was embossed because I didn't take it out of the top loader it got shipped in.  I  only figured it out when I did a search of my Red Sox checklist for 64 Mike Greenwell.  I don't know if I ever mentioned it before but I always like getting Greenwell cards because he was one of my favorite players as a kid.

Thanks for the cards Chris!!

It's Begining to Look Alot Like Christmas

There is a new present under the tree.  About two years after the first rumors Adrian Gonzalez is about to be a Red Sox.  He is costing 4 minor leaguers.  I guess that is not too bad.  I really thought it was going to cost a few players ready for the majors.  After all the doom and gloom when we didn't resign V-Mart, it turns out Theo had a plan all along.  We have the whole starting 9 in place and didn't give up a draft pick to do it.  Not only that but we will gain 4 picks with V-Mart and Beltran leaving.  That is if we don't sign Werth or Crawford.  Personally I don't want to see either of them come to Boston.  I think our OF is fine the way it is.  If I had to pick between the two though I would pick Werth.  Crawford is a little faster but he gets slower every year and will want paid for at least 6 years.  I say pass.  All we need to do now is shore up the bullpen and we can win with this lineup.  The only question is where to bat Gonzalez?  Personally I like:

Ellsbury
Pedrioa
Gonzalez
Youkilis
Ortiz
Drew
Kalish
Scutero
Salty (abbreviated cause I don't have all day to type his name)

But you could put 3, 4, and 5 in about any order and be productive.

I Guess I'm Never Going To Get Around To Posting Those Trades Now

I have gotten probably 20 packages in the last few months that I never did a trade post on.  I was just never feeling it.  I did however scan a few cards from each package and save them so I could get around to it eventually.  Well last night I found out my computer is fried so all those trade packages I scanned but never got around to posting will never get done.  So to all that have traded with me that I never posted; I'm Sorry!!!  Oh and if you are waiting on an e-mail from me I haven't been able to check it since Wednesday because my work computer blocks my hotmail account.  Hopefully I will be up and going again this weekend.

Welcome Back Jason Varitek

One more year at 2M.
Significantly less than what another team captain in the backside of his career is about to get.

I would have hated to see him anywhere else.

Does this happen to you follow up.

Brian over at Play at the Plate was experiencing technical difficulties.  Many comments brought up other problems people have with Blogger.  I'm wondering if anyone has seen this happen.

See how the comments on his post are right on top of his post?  Only a few blogs do this to me PATP and Troll are two that I can think of.

Other times there are blogs that won't let me comment because there is no comment section to comment in.  It is just a big blank hole like this.

This is from Sportssyzygy (formally Offy) but many of the blogs out there do this.  I was going to just e-mail a screen print to Brian but I figured it would be better to show everyone out there.

I like to leave comments because I know that when you post and nobody comments it feels like no one is reading.  Either of these two problems keep me from commenting on other peoples posts.

Cards from BA Benny

When I started sorting out the cards BA Benny sent me I thought this was a double.  For some reason I looked at the back and found out it was a Traded card. Not only a traded card but the last one I needed.

I'm always happy to get Topps Total cards.  There are so many of them chances are I don't have them yet when I get them.

Every year I try to put together a Topps Gold parallel set.  Evey year I fail miserably.  Here are a few to add to my newest failure.

I don't mind Attax cards.  I enjoy playing the game with my kid.  I don't however like them as inserts in other sets.  At least I don't have to chase anymore from the Update set because this was the last one I needed.

Thanks for all the great cards Mike.  I hope you do good in our fantasy league every week except for when you play me.

Lifetime Mailday

I have been horrible at posting mail days.  Sorry all that have traded with me.  All my fault.  I'm going to do better and it starts right now.  I received a package the other day from a rather new blog (at least new to me), The Lifetime Project.  I could tell Charlie scoured my wantlist because he didn't send me a single double.  Not only that but he knocked off a bunch of team sets for me.  I have a hole in my collection from 95-99.  I was collecting cards back then, it was actually the heyday of my buying, but I was only buying football.

These 5 cards finished off my 95 Upper Deck team set.  I like the HOFer Dawson the best.

This Stan Belinda finished off my 05 Fleer Update set.  Since I already had the base series finished this ended my search for any 95 Fleer.

This 96 Conseco finished of my 96 SP set.  I think Jose finished his career in Boston after blowing his elbow out pitching.  I may be wrong though he may have tried a comeback with another team.

96 Upper Deck is now complete also.

Charlie didn't just send mid 90s stuff he also sent some new stuff.  I love the 2007 SP Legendary Cuts base cards.  You can't tell from the scans but that is Vern Stephens and Cy Young.

Lastly this is a 2009 SP Authentic Pedroia.  I have a bunch of 09 SP Authentic but this is the only one I have above card #100.  I was beginning to think that all the high numbered cards were autos.

Thanks for the great trade.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING and Trade Bait

I hope everyone out there has a Happy Thanksgiving.

I would like to thank everyone that has traded cards with me.  Sorry I have been to lazy with this blog to post them all up.  I shall do a few but many are already put away in their binders and I have no way of telling who they came from anymore. Here is one that isn't filled away...

LONG ago Crinkly Wrappers had a contest and gave away some random stuff.  I mean random.  Everything from junk wax era cards to Topps Attax cards (which my 6 year old claimed and we have used many times not as ball cards but to actually play the game as it was intended).  It also had the following in it that don't fit in my Red Sox collection.   These are now for gift or trade.  Just let me know which you would like.

Conseco Star Cards - I don't know any Conseco collectors anymore.  20 years ago people would have been jumping all over these.

Some Yankees.  When I scanned these I didn't realize the Knobby cards were actually Twins.  They will soon grace the mailbox of Rhubarb Runner.  I think that is the best my scanner ever did a hologram card...

70s Dodgers

Pirate stars (and Jackson)

A few Molitors  I never saw that first one before.  I bet Thorzul already has it though.  If not he has first dibs.

Living in Cardinal territory these are cards I don't normally see.

Early 80 superstars.

Royal Superstars.  I can't believe I don't know any Brett collectors.

Thanks for the stuff Ted.  I'm ear marking any Jays I get for you.  If anyone else has some Blue Jays cards send them Ted's way.

And once again Happy Thanksgiving to all!!
