Congratulations

Although some don't' agree with it, Saturday Jim Rice will join the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. On Tuesday the Red Sox will retire his number 14. He will join Bobby Doerr 1, Joe Cronin 4, Johnny Pesky 6, Carl Yastrzemski 8, Ted Williams 9, Carlton Fisk 27, and Jackie Robinson 42 on the right field field upper deck.

(Man it took a long time for me to find a card that showed Rice's number 14 on the front)

Congratulations again, Jim.

Now with words

Since someone didn't have anything to say about the original post with no words and i am too lazy and unimaginate to scan cards and write a new post, here are some comments I should have made.

Doesn't Trot look like a bad ass in this card. Is he still playing??
When I got my tax return back I had planned on buying a riding lawnmower.

Because of this card I'm still pushing for at least another year.

Why did Topps kill Bowman Heritage? I always liked it better than Topps Heritage. They still had other designs to steal...

This is the first card of him I found listed as DH

The manager cards this year had killer backs to them. My vote for best back design off all time.
Posting because I'm still looking for that 05 All Time Fan Favorite #69 Lonborg.

I need more Pesky cards...

This is the worst Bowman design of all time.
Dude looks like he should be in old fasion black and white prison garb.

My dog ate my homework and got hold of this card.

I hate SP cards!! Thank You Slette!!
Pretty cool back for a 09 card..

More blog time

Extra words few pictures in this post just to spite others and make up for the other way around yesterday.

I have been horrible about posting lately. That may change for the next week though. Why you may ask? Well, as the soccer association president this weekend I played in an alumni soccer game. I was the oldest guy on the field with quite a players 15 or more years younger and college players to boot. I didn't even plan on playing but they needed one more player and I couldn't say no. I get suckered in every year and it is the only time I play all year. So now basically if I get up out of the recliner for the next week for anything at all it will be to amputate my legs.
In Red Sox news we finally cut ties with Lugo. We will still have the huge salary to pay but at least he won't be taking up a spot on the bench.

Isn't this the ugliest card you have ever seen. Somehow his right side of his face got caved in (left side of the card.) This thing is worse than some of those 09 Goudey monstrosities. He looks like on of the guys from the Fat Albert cartoon. Anyone know what that guys name was on the cartoon?

If I had any photoshop skills at all I would out a Red Sox uniform on Halladay, post it, and dream. Instead I'll just dream Halladay, Beckett, Lester... Wow!!!

If I were in Theo's shoes I would be working on a Mark Teahen trade. He can play either corner, 2nd, and the outfield corners. That would provide some much needed Lowell and Drew insurance. (on top of that he was a real nice guy when I talked to him at a game last year)

Just for Show

Someone recently told me they only come to my blog for the pictures. So here are some recent acquisitions with no banter.

New place to buy retail (not Wal-Maret or Target)

I don't remember anyone mentioning this before but base Topps is in Dollar General. It isn't just in Dollar General it was packaged just for them. as a kid going to the store with mom and getting ball cards. It is kind of sad the only places a That isn't just a price tag, it is printed right on the package. I was happy to find this. I remember kid can do that now is WM or Target. At $1 each these are aimed at kids. Hopefully they reach some new customers. I think they did here because this was the last pack left.

Winner, Winner McDonalds Dinner??

This is an update to my Gauntlet Has Been Thrown post.

I was the winner by default. Not really default more like leading a game in the 7th when the rain stops the game. See he has to "dress up" for work at times when we have customers visit and such while I don't. I can hide away in my warehouse and not be seen. In the end he made a good run at it but he only had so many Cardinals polos to wear. I be real honest if I would have had to dress up as many times as he did he would have won long ago.

What did I win? Our standard $5. So looks like the only dinner I can buy is from McDonalds. that is untill the end of the season. See that is where our better record bet comes into play that I talked him into. I've won that one a few times now. Hopefully it will turn into a double or nothing on who goes farther into the playoffs.

Go Sox!!

Trade With Pursuit of Red Sox

Even though I haven't been doing much blogging I have still been doing some trading. The latest package that I received came all of the way from England. Anyone that has read card blogs before knows that means I traded with Pursuit of Jacoby/80's(ness)/Red Sox. This is actually not our first trade, it seems we regularly send our doubles across the ocean to each other.
For me the centerpiece of this trade was the Youkilis mini. The only way I can figure out how to scan a mini and make it look mini is to put it next to a regular size card. This Manny also went straight into my red Sox Heritage binder.

I hardly have any O-Pee-Chee cards. I'm posting this Barrett as a precursor to another post.

Thanks John I hope to do this many more times.

Excuse Post

Multiple choice just in case anyone was wondering why I haven't been blogging lately...

a. coaching t-ball
b. nagging wife
c. gone fishing
d. nobody reads my crap anyway
e. ninjas
f. all of the above

answers below

Here are some scans of cards I got in a trade a while ago. I started a post scanned the cards then forgot about it. The cards came from a Dodger fan either GCRL or Night Owl just don't remember which and I don't have enough ambition to go through e-mails to figure out which one it was. Heck I barely have enough ambition to post. Anyway, enjoy.

I hate black bordered cards but this was my favorite black set until 09 Topps WM came along.
I know this got voted the wood set by Night Owl but to me 87 is the real wood set.

Those were the days.

The answer is f all of the above
a. Coaching T-Ball - Yes I did coach t-ball. The West Plains Red Sox went undefeated by the way.
b. Nagging Wife - My wife hates all this baseball card including and mostly this blog.
c. Gone Fishing - I live 30 mins from Mammoth Springs AK, a great trout fishing spot. I'm there almost every weekend.
d. No Readers - So I have 2 readers Punk Rock and Night Owl. 2 is pretty close to zero.
e. Ninjas - This one probably threw a few people. My 4 year old takes karate 2 days a week. They are called little ninjas
f. All of the above - See it is all of them.

At the Break...

From midseason Cy Young to MVP picks, the All Star break is when everyone draws the line and makes their comparisons. This year "at the half" I have decided to compare all of this years first half baseball card releases. I am only going to feature sets that I have 09 Red Sox of so even though A&G looks kick @$$ I have none in hand so they will not be featured. Maybe someone will feel sorry for me and trade me their Red Sox doubles including minis. (Hint Hint) So without further ado...

Bowman - I'm not a fan of black-bordered cards so boo for Bowman this year.

Bowman Chrome Draft Picks – I hate Bowman draft picks. It is a whole set of guys that nobody has ever heard of. Yes someone in the set may turn out to be a star but I’ll leave the prospecting to someone else and just pickup the Red Sox. At least they have white borders and not the black ones like the regular set.

Goudey - Not as good as the last two years. I almost completed 07 and 08 team sets otherwise I wouldn't even bother to pursue it this year. I do like the minis though.

Heritage - 1960 was Topps all-time best looking set so this was a home run. If they just didn't have so many SPs.

Topps Base - When I first saw the design online I didn't like it but it turns out that this is the best base set Topps put out in years. I love the photography this year. Keep it up Topps!!

Topps Wal-Mart - Argg, more black borders. But I am strangely attracted to them. This is now my favorite black-bordered set of all time. It is the black backgrounds that make the border work. Although they show fingerprints like crazy.

Topps Target (Throwback) - I thought I was going to love these till I got them in hand. Big disappointment. Even though the backs have that throwback feel the glossy fronts kill the cards and the old logo does nothing for me. Plus to me the absolute worse gimmick that manufacturers make is the card back parallel.

Upper Deck Base - The worse effort put up by Upper Deck in years. I am a die-hard Topps guy but found myself actively pursuing Upper Deck Base the last few years. Not so this year. Look how lazy they got one of these is series one #45 and the other is series two #551. Couldn't the photographer have at least stood somewhere else to take the picture? Yea, I will still pick up some in trade but I'm not buying any.

Upper Deck First Edition - Same as above with some gold color on them. Ugg!!

Legendary Cuts - When I saw these online I knew they would be awesome in person. Once I got them in-hand I found out just how wrong I was. Plus with so many SP cards I'll never finish this team set.

Spectrum - To me it looks just like last years. Heck it even looks like a bright colored Starquest card and pink sucks.

Last but not least, the best set of the year so far (until I get my hands on some A&G)...

O-Pee-Chee - I have seen lots of people bash O-Pee-Chee but I love this set. Why? It has that old-school feel. Not ancient like Goudey/A&G old school, more like 70's/80's cards; and I love them. The no gloss, large set, and matching borders screams nostalgia. Upper Deck's lone good product of 09 so far. Hopefully Goodwins meets my expectations.
