Breaking Them In

I recently made a pretty cool trade with Detroit Tigers Cards and Stuff. It turns out I was his first online trade partner ever. Hopefully I'm not his last because I know just how much fun it is trading with all of you bloggers and how generous some of you can be. Here is some the stuff Bobby sent me.




Somehow I missed out on these Topps Gallery till now. These are awesome to. I like the artwork even better that Masterpiece or A & G.

This card makes me miss Pedro. I wish I could go back to the days when Pedro was running his mouth and dominating baseball.

These Gallery are not quite as nice as the other but not shabby at all. I'm not one to pass up on one of the heroes from that magical 04 season.

I also needed this card for my 76 team set. I have doubled the cards I own in this set in February, maybe in a few months I will get it done.

Stickers. I had never seen one of these Fleer stickers before. I actually think it looks better than the Fleer base card.

I'm happy to have found another team collector to save my extra cards for. I hate opening packs knowing that the cards are going into a box for an untold amount of time. I'm glad that all the Tigers I pull now have a home that is only a bubble mailer away. I'm still searching for a few more team collectors though. Where are the Pirate, Blue Jay, D-Backs, and Nats collectors. I also keep seeing Cubbie collectors popping up like weeds but have yet to work out a trade with one of them.

Want List Auditions

I went a little nuts on Sportlots.com and bought over 100 2007-2008 Red Sox cards. I have found it to be a good source for buying cards. The singles are also cheaper than buying off of ebay or the Beckett Marketplace. I'm not going to post pics of any of them but I still need some more cards from last year. Guess the Auto Answer - Bill Virdon

Thorzul made the correct guess yesterday. He wins - Drum Roll....

The cards he just received from me and posted about here.

Bill Virdon was the National League Rookie of the year 1955 and won one gold glove. After his playing days were over he became a manager and in 1974 was named American league manager of the Year for the Yankees. Bill Virdon was also born in my hometown of West Plains Missouri. He now lives a few hours away in Springfield and doesn't make it to West Plains much. Over the years I had picked up a few of his cards knowing eventually he would be in town at some event and it finally happened. Our local college had an event featuring the areas "Sports Legends".

I was there early so and since there were no lines to get autographs yet I sat and talked to him for a bit. It was pretty cool. He was leaving for Spring Training with the Pirates in 4 days were he serves as a special outfield instructor. Evidently the coaches report weeks before the players because this was . He was pretty stooked about this year. He thinks this year will be the start of the turn around for the Pirates. Not because of the players though he says the whole front office staff has had a face lift this off-season. (something I haven't read anywhere else but the Pirates don't exactly make headlines) While I was talking my wife took my son around to get some autographs from some of the other "Sports Legends". In some many most cases they were REAL loose with the term legend.

Auto 1 - Larry "Gator" Rivers - One of the original Globetrotters. In addition to signing autos he put on a pretty good pregame andhalftime. show also.

Auto 2 - Charles Balentine - Played basketball for Arkansas. They deemed him a legend because he once hit a jumper over Jordan in a game to beat North Carolina.

Auto 3 - Robyn Slain - Does basketball tricks all over. She put on an amazing halftime show!! She showed up the "Gator" hands down. (to be fair though he is like 65 years old) She should be a current Globetrotter her tricks are amazing. She spins 10 basketballs all over her body at the same time.

Auto 4 - Jerry Armstrong - Member of the 'Glory Road' basketball team that broke the color barrier in college basketball. Since he is white I take that to mean he sat on the bench.

The ones we didn't get autographs of were:

Ned Reynalds (sport broadcaster)

Cherly Burnett (was about an hour late) - Former SMSU coach made famous by coaching you might have heard of because she coached Jackie Stiles.

Trish Knight - All time winningest high school+college volleyball coach. There was NO WAY I was getting her autograph!! Because I still think of her as my drivers ed teacher.

I recently got some autographs of a older player. I also got to talk to him for a little bit. Anybody want to guess who it was. Here are a few hints from the backs of some of his cards. I'll post the answer and pictures tomorrow.

Cards From Rickey Henderson Collectibles

I sent a package to Brad at Rickey Henderson Collectibles and he sent back a great bunch of Red Sox.

These Timeline cards eally grew on me. I hated the base version when I first saw it but the more I see it the more I like it. And I love the SP versions.

Isn't this Boggs cool. I don't know if this is some kind of insert or if it was from an actual set ofd playing cards. He also sent a Clemens to me.

2008 Goudey SP Ortiz. The only other one of these black & white Goudey SP I have ever seen was an A-Rod that I mailed off to The Cardboard Junkie a few months ago.

I used to hate these reprint sets but now I love them. I wish Topps would issue another Archives set.

These are really cool disks of Boggs and Nomar. I have a Marino and a Walter Payton but these are the first Red Sox ones I have ever owned.

He is a great trader and I would recommend sending any extra A's cards you have his way.

Cards from 30 Year Cardboard

Out of the clear blue I received a bunch of Red Sox from Brian at 30-Year-Old Cardboard. He had won bunch of late 80 early 90 stuff in a contest and decided to pass along the spoils. He chose to send me the Red Sox.









Does anyone know if there are color boardered varations for every card in the 89 Donruss set? It seems like every one I have a double of has a different border. Are some more rare than others? Is there such a thing as a rare 89 Donruss card?

This is my favorite Donruss design of them all.

He also sent some newer stuff.

I feel bad because I already owe him for an Ellis Burks. But not to fret I already did something about it. I know it is long overdue but you’ll be getting something in the mail real soon, I promise. I hope you like it when it gets there.
